Drawing Value & Tone
Bible:
So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:27
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:27
Everyone is creative. Creativity is hardwired into our DNA by God himself. All of us were made to be creative people. Creative juices run hot through our veins.
We see this clearly in Genesis 1:27.
Every man, woman, and child is creative. When we create, it pleases God, because He sees us reflecting his image. He sees us “imaging” him to the rest of the world. God loves to see his image shine throughout the world.
But creativity is hard work. It requires killing our laziness and working faithfully over extended periods of time. It requires a willingness to receive criticism with humility. It requires sweat and elbow grease. It requires diligence and faithfulness. It’s easier to not make anything at all and to suffocate the creative gifts that God has given us.
Your church needs your creative gifts. Your family needs your creative gifts. Your friends need your creative gifts. You have gifts that no one else has. We need your gifts.
So stop making excuses and start making stuff for the glory of God!

Objectives:
You will be able to use proper tools and techniques to add value & tone to turn a 2D shape into a 3D shape. You will recognize the effects of light and shade and use it in your drawing.
Materials:
pencil, paper, collection of fruits and vegetables
Process:
- watch this videos
- Choose a fruit or vegetable to draw.
- Make sure to pay close attention to how you use the space. Think about the whole space. Leave enough room to draw a shadow. If you need to, use your pencil to measure the object for correct proportion.
- Use your pencil to lightly draw the shapes of your fruit or vegetable on your paper. This part is done very lightly with pencil and is called underdrawing.
- Decide where your light source is coming from. Remember when drawing, the part of the object closest to the light source is usually where the value is the lightest. The farthest away is usually the darkest. The dark side casts the shadow. Pay attention to the different values or shades that are on your fruit/vegetable.
- Use your pencil to make an overdrawing, darkening in the areas of your underdrawing that will be part of your final drawing. Vary the values and tones to create shape and dimension to your drawing. Don't forget to draw the shadow.
