Painted Collages
The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it. For He has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the rivers.
Psalm 24:1-2
The outdoors is "God's Studio" and it tells us a lot about Him. Look around outside, what can you tell me about God? One thing that I can tell is that God likes color. The sky is blue, the grass is green, and flowers are all different colors. God creates some colors that feel warm and other colors that feel cool. Watch the following video to learn more about warm and cool colors.
Here are two paintings by a famous artist named Vincent van Gogh. Which one is painted with mostly warm colors? Which one is painted with mostly cool colors?
Objectives:
In this lesson you will explore and experiment with warm and cool colors; you will investigate foreground, mid ground, and background; you will create a collage.
Vocabulary:
- warm colors: include reds, yellows, and oranges; they remind us of things that are warm
- cool colors: include blues, greens, and purples; they remind us of things that are cool
- background: the part of the picture that is the farthest away
- foreground: the part of the picture that is the closest to us
- mid ground: the part of the picture that is midway or in the middle of the foreground and background
Materials:
white & tan construction paper, tempera paint, brushes, white oil pastels, glue sponges, scissors, black sharpies
Process:
- using a palette of cool colors and white, create various colors and tints on 2 pieces of white construction paper
- using a palette of warm colors and white, create various colors and tints on 2 pieces of white construction paper
- when the paintings are dry, cut a large circle from the warm color painting for a sun
- cut clouds from white construction paper
- glue them on the tan construction paper as the background
- cut large triangles for trees from the cool color paintings for the mid ground
- using white oil pastels, add stems to the trees
- glue the trees in the mid ground (you can overlap your trees)
- cut small hills from the warm color painting
- glue the hills as the foreground
- use a black sharpie to add lines on the hills and details
