Paper Dolls
My biggest hurdle is figuring out what to paint/draw
I'm somewhat venting, but also hoping that someone has some advice. I'm feeling really frustrated and anxious right now, because once again I'm staring at a blank piece of paper, desperately wanting to put stuff on it and I can't figure out what.
I spend quadruple the time searching for subject matter and inspiration than I do on ACTUALLY creating art because I can't figure out what I want to do, then if I find something I second guess myself. I talk myself out of things because even though I want to do something, I know there's no possible way my skill level will produce what is in my head.

How many of you have felt this way? Where can you find ideas for your art? Take a look at these videos. Some artists may be familiar to you, others may not. See if you can figure our where their ideas for art came from.
Jim Carrey: I Needed Color from JC on Vimeo.
Where did these artists get their ideas from? How do you think their artwork influences the people who view it?
Jim Carey uses art as a way to express his emotions. Former President Bush creates art to share his love for the United States military and veterans. Will Ryman picks subjects he does not understand, researches them, and creates art from what he learns.
Now look at these photos of artwork by Eleanor Antin. She expresses her political opinions by creating scenes with paper dolls. Sometimes she will create movies using her created paper dolls--each taking on a character and having scripted lines. She will even create the staging for her short movies.

From these artists we learn---
Art is a way for you to communicate your emotions, your thoughts, your ideas, your opinions.

The Bible tells us everyone is creative. That is because---
God created mankind in his own image...
Genesis 1:27
Creativity is hardwired into our DNA by God himself. Creative juices run hot through our veins. You can use that creativity to communicate your emotions, your thoughts, your ideas, and your opinions.
God also expects us to work together. Here are two verses from the Bible that tells us about teamwork.

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor
Ecclesiastes 4:9
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
Proverbs 27:17
When individuals work together, they can double their strength and get much more done as a team. A team has checks and balances, one person watches the other one's back. Team members help encourage each other and keep each other focused.
Objectives:
In this lesson you will explore communicating through art and working collaboratively to create a "paper doll" video.
Materials:
cardstock, cardboard, markers, sharpies, scissors, pencils, erasers, paper, paint, brushes, iPads
Process:
- Break up into groups of 3 or 4.
- Brainstorm emotions, thoughts, ideas, or opinions that could be communicated through "paper dolls." Think about what the "paper dolls" could look like. What could they say to communicate your ideas? What type of staging would you need for your video?
- Once you have thought about these things, work together as a group to write your script and plan your "paper doll" characters.
- Use card stock and art supplies to create your "paper dolls".
- Create staging for your video.
- Practice your script with your "paper dolls." Does your script convey your intended meaning? Make any needed revisions.
- Record your video with one of the iPads. Your video should not be longer than 3 minutes.
- Fill out this form:
- Once all the videos are recorded we will view them together as a class. Think about these things as you watch your classmates videos: What message do you get from the video? Is the message effectively communicated? Do the "paper dolls" and the staging work to convey the intended message?
