Sweet Stuff Paintings
O taste and see that the Lord is good. Psalm 34:8
When I hear that Bible verse I am reminded of a mission trip to Costa Rica. On that trip I realized that most children in Costa Rica do not get sweet stuff. When we would give them candy, they would get very excited. They would go and get their friends because they wanted them to taste the candy too. In the same way, when we realize how good Jesus is, we should want to share Him with our friends. I think about this when I see paintings by Wayne Thiebaud.
Wayne Thiebaud was born in Arizona on November 15, 1920. Watch this video about him:
Objectives:
In this lesson you will
- become familiar with the works of artist Wayne Thiebaud
- design & create an artwork about "sweet stuff"
Materials:
paper, paint, brushes, water, pencils, erasers
Process:
- What did you find interesting about this artist?
- Look at these paintings by Thiebaud.
- Do you like his artwork? Why or why not?
- What kind of things does Thiebaud paint?
- What colors does he use?
- Do you think his paintings are large or small?
- Thiebaud would use repetition when he painted. That means he would repeat things in his artwork. What do you see that he repeated?
- Do his paintings make you hungry?
- Choose a "sweet stuff" subject and make a few sketches of it. Once you like a sketch, begin to draw it in balance on your paper. Remember to enlarge your sweet subject so it fills the paper. Remember to draw light until it's right!
- Once you have your "sweet stuff" subject drawn, begin to mix paint for the back ground. ALL colors must be mixed with white to create a pastel. When mixing with white, remember to add small amounts of color to the white paint until you reach the value you desire. DO NOT add white to color or you will have to add bucket loads of white before you reach a pastel tint.
- When you finish compare your artwork with Thiebaud's. Did you remember to draw your subject so it filled the page? Are your colors pastel?
