The Beginning of Art
In the beginning God created... Genesis 1:1
I believe people would agree that art is universal; all societies in every kind of economic or political situation, in all time periods, have produced art. But why? God’s Word tells us God is the original creator (Genesis 1:1). He created out of nothing not only the objects that exist, but even the materials out of which they are made. Psalm 8:3-4 describes the creation of the heavens as "the work of thy fingers"–mere small motor skills for God!"

- What story do you think the artists were trying to tell with their art? What questions does the artwork raise?
- Suppose you wanted to leave artwork telling stories of the Bible through drawings on the walls of a cave. What story would you illustrate for future generations to see? How would you tell the story without using words?
- Roughly sketch out your ideas.
- Share your sketches with the class and critique each other's ideas. Choose one of your ideas and use it to illustrate your story as a "cave" drawing.
- Use colored pencils, paint, or oil pastels to create your story on newsprint paper.
- Once you have finished, answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper.
- Do your shapes, designs, and lines make sense in telling your story?
- Did you stick with basic symbols to illustrate your story?
- Is your story recognizable?
- Is the drawing complete? Does it look unfinished?
- Does the piece look like it was drawn on a rocky surface?
- Create a wall display of your artwork
