Dream Bedrooms - a lesson in one point perspective
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14
One of my favorite activities when I worked with youth was going to different student's houses and filming their bedrooms (with their parent's permission, of course). It was incredible to see what kind of stuff was in those rooms! Some had stuffed animals everywhere, some were filled with sporting equipment, and some had posters of musicians and actors stuck all over the walls. The Bible tells us in Psalm 139:14 that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. We are all created unique. That became especially evident when looking at those bedrooms. It was obvious that God created each of us with special interests, likes, and dislikes. While some of the kids liked green, others liked blue. While some liked to play soccer, others liked to play the guitar. If I were to go to your house and film your room, what would I find out about you?
Objectives:
In this lesson you will explore one point perspective and create a drawing of your DREAM bedroom.
Materials:
pencil, eraser, ruler, paper, practice printouts, colored pencils, index card
Vocabulary:
To understand One Point Perspective it is important to know the following terms. Review and study the following:
- one point perspective: a form of perspective in which the lines receding into space converge at a single vanishing point
- line: a path left by a moving point
- horizon line: the line on which vanishing points are positioned, more accurately described as the eye line or eye level
- vertical: at right angles to the horizon; upright
- vanishing point: the point or points on the eye line at which parallel lines appear to converge
- parallel: two lines equidistant at every point along their paths
Process:
Many famous artists have used one point perspective in their work. Below is Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper and Vincent van Gogh's Bedroom in Arles.
Drawing the vanishing point, horizon line, parallel lines, and the lines that converge on the vanishing point help to understand one point perspective.

Here are 2 videos that will help you draw your dream bedroom
Think about...
- What you can include in your bedroom drawing that will tell me about you? Do you play a musical instrument? Do you play on a sport team? Do you have a hobby?
- What furniture do you need to include?
- What colors do you like?
Using the drawing techniques you have practiced, create a one point perspective drawing of your DREAM bedroom.
When you finish, answer the following questions in complete sentences: What does your Dream bedroom tells me about you? If you did this drawing again, what would you change?
